The work should really start before you even get offered an interview - at the point at which you apply for a job you should already know something about the company you are applying to, and that information will form the basis of the research you do prior to the interview.

Most jobs these days have clear job specifications - these will typically outline both the duties involved in the job, and the specification of the type of person they are looking for. This will include a mixture of skills, experience, qualifications and personal qualities.
Study this document.You need to not only say that you have the skills, experience and aptitudes they are looking for, you also need to be able to give examples of how and when you might have used these skills.
The best strategy is to work with someone else - a friend or family member - and get them to ask you the types of questions you might expect to be asked on the day. Having the chance to think things through and come up with a good answer will make you much more relaxed and prepared come the big day.
