Leaving a Job
There are rules to follow when you are leaving a job. Even though you may be winding down, it's still important to go out with a good impression - you never know when you might need to use this job as a reference, or indeed, if you will wind up working for them again in the future.
That means you do certain things in your last few weeks or days:
- Keep up with your work
- Stick to the rules on issues like dress code and punctuality
- Don't bury problems for someone else to deal with after you're gone
- Make sure someone knows exactly how you have done things, where to find information they might need, etc
- Be polite and friendly and thank your bosses, co-workers etc for their help
There are also several things you don't do:
- Slag off the company, your boss etc to co-workers
- Boast about the great new job you are going to, how much more money you are going to earn, etc
- Run the company down to customers
- Attempt to steal customers for your new job
You are an employee of your current company until the final minute of your last day working with them, so treat them with respect and leave with a good impression - it's the professional thing to do, and will help to establish your reputation in the business as a whole as a good employee.
