Starting your New Job

What should you do when you are starting a new job? It can be a nervous time for many people - the old saying "first impressions are lasting impressions" is supported by research, so getting off on the right foot is important when you are starting a new job.

The first thing is to get the basics right. Be sure you know exactly where you are going, how you will get there, how long it will take, etc. Being punctual on your first day is essential if you are to create a good impression.

Dress code is another important consideration. All companies have their own rules and style - you don't want to be either under dressed or over dressed, so make sure you ask what the rules are. It's also good practice to look around when you are at an interview to see what people wear. It will tell you a lot about the company.

Many people work too hard to impress when they are just starting out - trying too hard will make you seem nervous, pushy even. Be enthusiastic, but also be open to others - take some time to see the way a company does things rather than diving in head first.

Remember, the first few days are all about learning, so be sure to listen to other people and take their suggestions on board. Even if you later figure out your own way of doing things, it's better to follow the advice of more experienced people when you are new to a company.
