This is a great career path, with lots of opportunities and continued growth, but getting a job can be tough - qualifications are essential for working in the fitness industry, with a Level 2 fitness qualification, such as that offered by the YMCA, the entry level certification needed to get started in this field.
Work in the fitness industry can be quite varied, however the starting position for most people is as a fitness instructor. Instructors work in gyms and health clubs, and will work with groups or individuals, designing and leading exercise programmes, and leading various types of group classes.
Duties vary, but will typically include:
- Conducting fitness assessments, consultations and inductions with new clients
- Explaining and demonstrating routines for clients
- Showing people how to use exercise machines and free weights properly
- Supervising clients while they work out
With the increased public interest in health and fitness, there are more and more opportunities to work in this field, in a variety of settings - you'll find openings in fitness centres, gyms, health clubs, hotel leisure centers, corporate fitness programs, even cruise ships.
Of course, the ultimate goal for many is to work privately with individuals, however, you will need to build up your knowledge, skills and experience before you can consider this option.
The quickest way to progress in this field is to develop your range of skills and qualifications - working with a variety of people will make the job more interesting and better paid, and allow you to develop a good reputation.
