Jobs in the Hair Industry
Working in the hair industry is popular with both men and women, a real hands on way to work with the public.
As a result, good customer skills are highly valued in the hair industry - this is not the place to work if you are shy or don't like talking with people! Of course, there's more to it than just good people skills - you also need training and qualifications.
The standard entry qualification is the NVQ level 2 in Hairdressing. This equips you with the basic skills you need to become a registered and a qualified hairdresser. It includes:
- Shampooing and conditioning the hair and scalp
- Developing hair cutting techniques
- Hair colouring - a variety of techniques
- Blow drying
- Hair perming procedures
- Hair setting
- Shampooing and conditioning
- Health and safety procedures
- Working at reception
- Working as part of a team
To get on a course you will need to have either completed the Hairdressing NVQ level 1, or have at least 4 GCSEs at level D or above - these must include Maths or English.
The course lasts one year, and once you are finished you can look for a job in a hair salon. Starting salaries range from ?10,000 - ?14,000 per year.
For many people, the ultimate goal is to become your own boss as a self employed hairstylist - to progress you will need to get on the job experience, and also consider a higher level qualification, such as the Level 3 NVQ.
